The Job Search Toolkit for When You Feel Stuck
A practical roadmap from the Women Back to Work Power Hour
This toolkit is based on a Women Back to Work Power Hour held in an Ask Me Anything format, where returners had the opportunity to learn directly from our very own Tami and Mrunali. The session focused on real job search challenges returners face after a career break and the practical systems they use to bring structure, clarity, and momentum back into the process.
The resources and frameworks shared here reflect the same value delivered during the live Power Hour, including tools actively used by the speakers, such as job tracking methods and LinkedIn visibility strategies. This toolkit is designed so returners can revisit it anytime, even if they were unable to attend the session live.
Phase 1: Build Your Job Search Command Centre
Goal: Replace guesswork with data.
A job search that lives only in your head is hard to improve. Creating a simple tracking system helps you see what is working, where things stall, and what needs adjustment.
What to Track and Why It Matters
| Metric | What to Capture | Why This Helps |
| Role and Company | Job title, company name | Keeps applications focused and intentional |
| Source | LinkedIn, referral, company site | Shows which channels convert |
| Application Status | Applied, screening, interview, no response | Identifies funnel drop offs |
| Human Contact | Recruiter or hiring manager name | Enables meaningful follow ups |
| Feedback | Any comments or signals | Helps refine resume or interview approach |
Action: Use Tami’s Job Tracking Template to log and review your search weekly.
If applications are not converting to interviews, focus on resume alignment and sourcing.
If interviews are not progressing, focus on storytelling and role fit.
Phase 2: Increase Visibility Strategically
Goal: Signal readiness without overwhelm.
LinkedIn is more than a job board. It is a visibility tool. You do not need to be everywhere. You need to be consistent and intentional.
The 15 Minute Daily Visibility Checklist
- Set alerts for targeted keywords such as returnship, contract roles, or career restart
- Follow relevant hashtags like #WomenBackToWork, #Returnship, and #CareerBreak
- In addition, follow hashtags related to your job role, industry, and the companies you want to work for
- Engage with relevant posts within the first one to two hours
- Comment thoughtfully on two or three industry or leadership posts
This keeps you visible to recruiters while protecting your time and energy.
Phase 3: Outreach That Builds Real Momentum
Goal: Pair applications with human connection.
Direct applications are more effective when combined with personalized outreach.
Effective outreach includes:
- A clear reference to the role
- A brief alignment statement
- A concise and human tone
Quality outreach consistently outperforms volume-based applications.
Resume and Interview Strategy
Two audiences, two approaches
Resume Strategy
- For ATS: Keyword aligned, clean formatting, role specific
- For recruiters: A clear narrative explaining your career break as a phase of growth or transition
Interview Framework: STAR
- Situation: Brief context
- Task: The challenge
- Action: What you did
- Result: Measurable outcome
Using a consistent framework builds confidence and clarity.
Your Weekly Return to Work Roadmap
Monday: Strategy
- Update your job tracker
- Set three targeted alerts
Tuesday to Thursday: Execution
- One personalized outreach per day
- Active LinkedIn engagement
- Apply only to roles aligned with your criteria
Friday: Review
- Identify what moved forward
- Adjust keywords, outreach, or resume as needed
Do Not Navigate This Alone
Job searching is more sustainable with support. Seek advice, not just opportunities. Learn from peers, engage in community conversations, and share progress. Momentum builds faster when you are not doing this alone.
