The Smart Job Search Playbook for Returners

This Week’s Power Hour: Ask Me Anything with Tami Forman and Mrunali Bhaisare

Behind every resume edit and job application is one core challenge: confidence.

In this Ask Me Anything session, Tami and Mrunali tackled the practical side of the job search, from networking strategy to tailoring resumes and navigating career gaps. The discussion provided practical, actionable advice that returners can actually use.

Here are the ideas that came out of that session.

Start with your Network

Before you apply anywhere, reconnect.

Tami’s advice was simple. Go back to people who already know your work. Former managers, teammates, clients. These are not cold leads. These are warm doors.

Reach out to reconnect, not to ask for a job. Ask what skills are currently in demand. Ask how the industry has shifted. The answers to these questions will give you clarity on how to tailor your job search.

Also, use the time you have with former coworkers to reminisce about projects you worked on together. They will remind you – and you will remind yourself! — how valuable and talented you are. Those are the conversations that will rebuild your confidence.

Apply Smarter

Mass applying to jobs drains your energy and rarely works. Instead, focus on a small number of companies. You can target companies where you previously worked, where you have connections, or that are near your home (for in-office roles).

LinkedIn can be great for discovery of jobs and companies to target, but it’s not the best place to apply to jobs. Go to the company’s career page instead and apply directly there.

Niche job boards can also be valuable if you are targeting a specific industry. Curation beats volume.

Tailor Every Resume with Intention

A generic resume will not stand out in a sea of applications. Use AI strategically to:

  • Refine resume bullet points and mirror keywords from the job description
  • Highlight directly relevant experience
  • Remove information that does not directly relate to that role
  • Generate a cover letter that aligns with the role and bolsters your resume

Always review what AI produces. If you cannot confidently explain what is written on your resume, rewrite it. Tools support you. They do not speak for you.

Address Career Gaps Clearly and Confidently

Do not try to hide a career break.

Be upfront. Add a simple line in your resume timeline. Reference it briefly in your cover letter if needed.

Then shift the focus to what you did during that time:

  • Skills maintained or upgraded
  • Volunteer work
  • Certifications
  • Community involvement

The break is a fact. The growth during the break is the story.

Visual Checklist: Your Weekly Job Search Reset

Use this at the start of every week.

☐ Reconnect with at least one former colleague
☐ Identify 3–5 target companies
☐ Tailor resume for at least one specific role
☐ Review LinkedIn for clarity and relevance
☐ Practice articulating my career break confidently
☐ Use AI as a support tool, not a replacement

Small, consistent action builds momentum.

Final Reminder from the Session

Confidence does not come from waiting until you feel ready.
It comes from staying in motion.

Stay connected. Stay visible. Stay in the room.
